TEMPLE BUILDING

The Creative Universe Project pays special attention to the restoration and construction of Orthodox temples. Churches and Orthodox shrines are being built and restored in Russia, Belarus, Serbia, Bulgaria and Cyprus. Largely thanks to the support and efforts of the Foundation in Saint Petersburg, the buildings of the Ioannovsky Convent on Karpovka were restored, the Church of St. George the Victorious, the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and the Church in the name of St. Blessed Xenia of St. Petersburg were erected. According to ancient, miraculously saved drawings and photographs, the Temple of the Nativity on the Sands destroyed in 1934 was recreated from scratch.

St. Nicholas Cathedral of the Sura Ioannovskiy Convent, Arkhangelsk region, Pinezhsky district, village of Sura

The first building of the St. Nicholas Church in Sura was built in 1687. In 1888, the holy righteous John of Kronstadt took part in the laying of the foundation of the new temple building. Two years after the start of construction, the Priest wrote in a letter to his wife: “I arrived in Sura on the evening of August 12, and how happy I was when I saw the Church and the bell tower almost finished, it’s hard to put it into words.

The buildings of the Church and the bell tower are excellent, beautiful. Now I began to look at them from top to bottom, or rather from bottom to top, and went up to the spire of the bell tower from where the view is wonderful in all directions - on wide meadows, fields, rivers, forests, villages. The bell tower is 19 sazhens up to the cross, the church is 18 sazhens: the church and the bell tower are very beautiful; church admits 1000 people...". In 1891, the temple was built and solemnly consecrated. It was completely destroyed during the years of Soviet power. And only on May 29, 2003, by efforts of the newly formed Sura women's community the first restoration work in the St. Nicholas Church began. It was restored by the well-known Russian philanthropist Vyacheslav Zarenkov who is a ktitor of the Sura convent.
